Combustible metal fires can reach temperatures as high as 4700°C. Conventional extinguishing agents are ineffective at these extreme temperatures, which is why specialized powders were developed to tackle Class D (metal) fires. These powders are applied using a low-velocity nozzle, where they melt upon contact with the fire. This forms a glass-like layer that cuts off the oxygen supply, preventing the fire from spreading while simultaneously absorbing heat from the burning metal.
